Nemours Mansion & Gardens in Wilmington, Delaware
The Alfred I. duPont Trust supports the care and perpetuation of the Nemours Mansion & Gardens ("Nemours"), the home that Mr. duPont built in 1909.
The 47,000-square foot Nemours mansion rests on 140 acres in Wilmington, Delaware, the community that is also home to the modern-day DuPont corporation. Alfred named the estate Nemours after the French town his great-great-grandfather, Pierre Samuel duPont, represented in the court of Louis XVI. Designed by the renowned Carrère and Hastings firm of New York, the home is a rare example of 18th century French Neo-Classical architecture in America.
As the first home built specifically for his use, Nemours was very important to Alfred duPont. He hunted and fished on the property that at one time totaled 3,000 acres and his family swam and boated in the grand reflection pond. Historians today note that his mechanical inclination is evident throughout the features of the home and gardens.
Although the Mansion and Grounds are closed until 2008 for restorations, the property is normally open to the public from May through December. Call (302) 651-6912 or visit nemoursmansion.org to learn more.
